Tami's Cookies

These cookies are fantastic! Many thanks to Tami of Vegan Appetite for the recipe. She is a wonderful vegan cook who has a new cookbook coming out soon. You can pre-order American Vegan Kitchen on amazon.com  I was lucky enough to be tester and got to preview some excellent recipes- including the cookies pictured above. These cookies made my brother into a believer in vegan baked goods. He wouldn't try some of the stuff I baked because it might have tofu in it or something. But when he saw these he couldn't resist. I think he ate a dozen himself! They're that good.

Pecan cookies- Oops!

Always a good idea to test a recipe before you need to make it for an event- here's why:
I did manage to scrape them out of the pan

They tasted good even if they weren't pretty!

A little rant- Hold the sawdust please!

This morning a friend brought me a vegan cookie from a local restaurant that just started carrying a few vegan products. She thinks I need to go introduce myself to the owner. Why?
This "cookie" tastes like twigs and sawdust! This is the type of cookie that makes people cringe when they hear "vegan". Just because it's vegan doesn't mean it has to be healthy. It doesn't need to be sugar free or have whole wheat flour in it. If I want something healthy I'll eat a bowl of bran cereal or something. If I want a cookie -I want something sweet and satisfying. If I want cake I want it to be moist and yummy. If someone says "that's pretty good for being vegan" then it's not good enough! They should say " this is really good!" Period.
Ok, rant is over. I'm gonna go eat a cookie.

Mediterranean Olive Bread

I saw this on another blog last week http://http://www.drmiggy.com/2009/11/01/food-pr0n-mediterranean-olive-bread/ and just had to make it! It's the Med Olive Bread from Joy of Vegan Baking. The picture doesn't do justice to the little bursts of sun-dried tomato, crunchy walnuts, oil cured olives and the rosemary and basil to really amp up the flavor!
(Much better pic on the other blog)

Whoopie!

So I have to admit- I've never had a whoopie pie....
Until today. They smelled sooo good while baking - it was hard to wait for them to cool so I could make the filling and put them together. I think they came out pretty well for the first attempt- but I still don't quite get it.
They were good, don't get me wrong. But when I eat something sweet I want it to be fantastically worth the calories.
I'm taking them to a friend's house for dessert tonight so we'll see where they rate on the whoopie scale.

Autumn Cookies!

I knew I had to try these babies when I saw the post here:

These were delicious pillows of spice. The pumpkin flavor was very subtle- in fact if someone doesn't like pumpkin and you don't mention it's in there- they probably wouldn't know.

I made the recipe as written with only 1 change- I used 2 tsp of vanilla instead of 2 T. That sounded like a lot. If anyone makes them with 2 T let me know what happens!

RE: *

Dairy free and delicious*

*and vegan

At the farmers' market I didn't want to use vegan. I thought it might scare people away from trying some new things. I think it worked. The response from people was amazing! It was so cool to have people taste a sample and then decide they had to buy more of those cookies. Or muffins. Or whatever.

And to watch their faces when they finally noticed the dairy free sign. Huh? How did you do that?

I also never realized the huge number of people with dairy allergies. Every week I had someone come to the stand and say their son or neighbor or co-worker can't eat dairy and then pick up some goodies to take home for them.

Like the carrot cake mini above.

Here goes Nothing!

My first blog post! I really am terrible with computers so we'll see if this even works- but thanks to Rox http://roxetta.blogspot.com/ for the suggestion.

My name is Lea and I've been a vegan for a little over two years. My passion is baking and I'd love to make it my full time career. So hopefully I can post some pictures of delicious baked goods to tempt you. If I can figure out how to post them!
